Avrum J. Rosen



Avrum J. Rosen graduated from the State University of New York at Old Westbury (B.A., 1976) and then from Hofstra University (J.D., 1984) where he was an Associate Editor of the Hofstra Law Review from 1983-1984. After graduation, he clerked for a U.S. Magistrate Judge in the Southern District of New York and then went into private practice in two firms that focused on new construction of condominiums and co-operative apartment buildings and commercial real estate, in addition to commercial landlord-tenant matters.

Having developed an interest in Bankruptcy law, Mr. Rosen developed practices in that area at both firms and in 1989 started his own practice with an emphasis in all of these areas. Since then, that firm has developed a boutique bankruptcy practice in all areas of bankruptcy law. The firms have helped hundreds of individuals and small businesses reorganize or get a fresh start through either bankruptcy proceedings or out-of-court “workouts”. Mr. Rosen has represented debtors, creditors, creditors’ committees and was elected as the Creditor Trustee in the Flushing Hospital Chapter 11 case and the Operating Trustee in the Total Times Solutions Payroll Chapter 11 case. He has represented several major labor unions in bankruptcy proceedings and has served on numerous creditors’ committees in major New York hospital cases including; St. Vincent’s Hospital, Flushing Hospital, Episcopal Hospital System, and Brooklyn Hospital. The firm also represents numerous chapter 7 trustees in administering complex estates and recovering assets.

Mr. Rosen’s real estate experience has led to his involvement in chapter 11 cases where hundreds of millions of dollars of real estate has been sold or been reorganized. Mr. Rosen also served for nine years (from 2002-2011) on the Town of Huntington Planning Board and developed a deep understanding of land use and zoning issues.

Mr. Rosen was admitted to the New York bar in 1984, and the U.S. District Courts for the Southern, Northern and Eastern Districts of New York and the U.S. Court of Appeals, Second Circuit and has represented clients in all of those courts. Mr. Rosen has also appeared pro hac vice in bankruptcy courts in New Jersey, Florida, Texas, and California. On a personal level, Mr. Rosen has long been involved in community affairs. He was a member of the Town of Huntington Youth Board from 1992-96 and a member of the Sanctuary Advisory Board (Youth Service Organization) from 1990-92. He served on the Eagle Dock Beach Foundation for over a decade and has provided pro bono services to numerous not-for-profit organizations and has been active in Democratic politics.

His outside interests include skiing, kayaking, photography, and carpentry.
